Bill Jeralds--An angel of infinite possibilities
#Throw Back Mondays (originally posted 8/10/10)
A cold, a collapsed lung, double pneumonia, two collapsed lungs, acute respiratory distress system, a coma. Five years ago, this series of events plagued Bill Jeralds--a man living in LA and working as a technician for companies such as Myspace and Digital Insight. Jeralds’ wife was told that he would never wake up from this awful coma but she did not sign to stop treatment--she believed he would persevere, and three days later, Jeralds miraculously woke up.

#TBM Artist Interview: WAV Artist Vonder Gray

#Throw Back Mondays (originally posted 8/22/10)
Vonder Gray is another artist at the WAV who has been involved with art and acting for over twenty years. Gray describes her art as “abstract expressionist”.  “The color, the brush strokes, the markings if you will, are all conceived at an emotional level that informs the work both on the surface and beneath the surface”. Gray went on to say that she “is always interested in what’s behind the façade of a painting and of a person”.

#TBM Artist Interview: WAV Artist Taras Tulek 1946 - 2014

our lady of black light#Throw Back Mondays (originally posted 8/22/10)
At about 22-years-old, Taras Tulek pursued art for only two reasons.
“I wanted to help people. I wanted to challenge myself,” says Tulek, who will turn 64 this month.
Wishing to pursue a job that allowed him to assist others who suffer mentally, Tulek was on-path towards earning a degree in psychiatry. But then, he changed his mind.
“I decided that I could really challenge myself by being an artist,” says Tulek, who believes he could serve the same role of assisting others as an artist.
“I could then give the same comfort to people through art, and really express … the awesomeness of existence to other people.”

#TBM Artist Interview- WAV Resident Frances Spencer

#Throw Back Mondays (originally posted 8/10/10)
As a playwright, a poet, a painter, and a print-maker, Frances Spencer has firmly planted herself in both the world of art and the world of writing and drama--but there really is not much of a distinction to be found there. Spencer has lived and enjoyed her two passions thoroughly through her experimenting and conceiving and creating.

#TBM Artist Interview- WAV Resident Luther Gerlach

ESH64732Luther Gerlach—A Modern Day Vintage Photographer
#Throw Back Mondays (originally posted 8/10/10)
Edward Weston’s vintage classical photography took simple subjects--the naked body or a simple plant--and transformed each into something magnificent through his genius use of the camera and the darkroom. Luther Gerlach is one of many who studied Weston’s work and immediately became enthralled with his skill--both technical and visual.

#TBM Artist Interview- WAV Resident Erin O’Brien

EOP#Throw Back Mondays (originally posted 8/10/10)
Erin O’Brien Brings Your Walls to Life
Upon entering O’Brien’s studio the first item that catches your attention is a life like painting of three young boys. The painting was immaculate; the clarity was so precise that I could’ve sworn it was in HD. The beauty of this painting reminded me of another great painting done by a superb renaissance artist: “Portrait of the Artist Brother and Sisters by Sofonisba Anguissola”. Once inside I had the pleasure to make the acquaintance of O’Brien’s dear friend Betty. O’Brien was very humble, and without the help of Betty I wouldn’t have been able to pry some of O’Brien’s outstanding accomplishments out of her

#TBM Artist Interview- WAV Resident Colin Fraser Gray

#Throw Back Mondays (originally posted 8/10/10)
Tea with Colin Frasercolinfrasergray artist
Before meeting with Colin Fraser Gray, I had the opportunity to browse through his website; www.colinfrasergray.com. The website gave me a brief overview of Colin’s work, and his accomplishments. His work is mesmerizing; it jumps out and literally shakes your soul. This was the feeling it gave me from looking at the online photo’s, to see his artwork close up in real life was an experience all its own. From my research I came across interesting facts on Colin. In 2006 Colin rocked the city of Santa Barbara with his controversial sculpture “W”. The sculpture is a toppled, upside down McDonalds sign with green arrows shot into it. A very powerful piece that, I took as a stance against the corporatism that was running rampant at the time, and the head honcho known as “Dubya”.

#TBM - Artist Interview: WAV Artist Jacqueline Woods

JW1
#Throw Back Mondays (originally posted 8/2/10)
Has the process of making a photograph become completely obsolete in the contemporary art world? Not for Jacqueline Woods. In fact, the process of developing and printing the photo is an essential facet to her work as a whole. The process, coupled with themes of memory and identity is what makes Woods' photographs so enticing.

Artist Interview: HUD Resident Artist Mariana Peirano

intro

Eye On This Artist
Mariana Peirano is another artist who I think we should keep an eye on.  I don't remember where I first saw her painting "just when it all falls apart", but I fell in love with it. Although the painting is eerie, I love it because the girl in the painting reminds me of a remarkable young woman who is no longer with us named Chloe Blohm who I had the amazing opportunity to meet through her mother. Chloe was also artist, and in fact, I commissioned her first painting which graces the top of my staircase.  I am so fortunate to have the opportunity to interview the artist of that beautiful painting.  Funny how things work out.

Artist Interview - The HUD Ventura Resident Artist Jonas Lara

INTRO Eye On This Artist
I was really excited to interview Jonas for Society 805 after his name kept coming up when I began asking about artists in the 805 who were good but never seemed to get the right exposure. Something I noticed was that the same group of people were always getting the exposure around town and it was becoming quite boring.  Fast forward, I hear about the  HUD Ventura, a new artist hub, with a cool hip vibe where they feature artists from all over on a monthly basis, and even better, they also have resident artist studios for LOCAL artists like Jonas Lara.

Artist Interview - HUD Ventura Resident Artist Eva Ryan

Eye On This Artist
I met Eva Ryan on a very hot Thursday afternoon at her studio that was currently being built, literately the walls just went up that week. She somehow managed to make a little work space amongst all the construction in the middle of her studio. Currently several studios are being built for the resident artists at The HUD Gallery in Ventura. She told me that everything would be done by next week for first Friday, although I had my doubts looking at all of the studios with debris and furniture all in piles. Eva has a very sweet disposition and did not let the chaos of the studio distract her from letting me shoot her while she worked.
