Don't you just love the fall season with all of the warm colors and fall vegetables, especially the pumpkin. A pumpkin is not a vegetable however, it is a fruit, in fact it's a berry! Pumpkins aren’t just for decorations and pie, but they are packed with skin healthy vitamins and antioxidants. They contain, alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which increase cell turnover, to brighten and smooth the skin. Pumpkins have antioxidants, vitamin A and vitamin C, which boosts collagen production to prevent the signs of aging while softening and soothing the skin from the dry and irritating weather. They also have anti-inflammatory and antifungal components. Did you know pumpkins are great for treating Rosacea and redness? Here are 5 amazing pumpkin DIY recipes for the body that you can make at home:
-
1 Pumpkin Face Scrub
Mix a few tablespoons of cooked and mashed (or canned) pumpkin with 2 tablespoons of plain, unsweetened yogurt (rich in lactic acid, a great natural exfoliator) and 1 tablespoon of ground almonds and/or oats. Apply the scrub to your face and let it sit for a few minutes to allow the pumpkin and yogurt to start to soften dead skin cells before using your fingers to gently scrub your face in small curricular motions. The dead, dull skin cells will wash away and your face will look fresh and flawless! -
2 Pumpkin Body Mask
Mix 1/2 cup pumpkin puree (fresh or canned),
1/2 cup virgin, cold-pressed coconut oil
(which not only moisturizes, but also helps to exfoliate deal cells and even has anti-bacterial properties) and 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (which is antioxidant rich, anti-bacterial and smells delicious!). Apply generously to clean skin (in the shower is neatest!) and massage it into the skin. After 10 minutes, rinse with warm water and pat dry – we think this is a perfect body treat to do while you let a deep conditioning hair mask steep! -
3 Pumpkin Hair Mask
½ cup pureed pumpkin
¼ cup of natural plain yogurt
2 tablespoons of honey
Combine all ingredients together and mix well. Apply the mask to your hair, make sure to apply it from roots to ends. Cover your hair with a shower cap or a plastic bag to trap in the heat which opens up your hair follicles to allow the mask to really deep condition your hair. Leave the mask in for 20-30 minutes. Carve a pumpkin while you’re waiting! :) Rinse the mask off with warm water, shampoo and condition like usual and make sure to give your hair a blast of cold water at the end to close up those follicles and lock in the moisture for smooth and shiny hair. Goodbye dry and dead Fall hair. -
4 Pumpkin Honey Facial Mask
(Yields one facial mask)
2 Tbsp organic canned pumpkin puree or 1 small pumpkin
1/2 tsp organic honey
1/2 tsp milk (I used skim, but you can substitute soy or almond)Directions
1: Start with clean skin. Remove all makeup and wash your face with your regular cleanser.
2: Combine pumpkin puree, honey, and milk in a small bowl and mix well. If using a fresh pumpkin (or leftovers from a carved jack-o-lantern), scrape the insides and remove the seeds. Beat the gooey insides to a creamy pulp and mix with honey and milk.
3: Apply the mask using your fingers or a medium-sized makeup brush; avoid getting the mixture too close to the eyes. You can also apply to the neck and décolletage, but you’ll probably need to double the ingredients.
4: Allow the mask to set for about 20 minutes.
5: Gently wash off the mask with a warm, damp washcloth and follow with a moisturizer. -
5 Pumpkin Body Butter
Found several recipes on how to make this scrumptiously smelling product, this was our favorite one!
It does not have any pumpkin in it, however it is such a simple and amazing recipe that we had to add it to the list.
Ingredients
½ cup Shea butter
¼ cup Coconut oil
2 Tbsp. cup Olive oil
2 vitamin E capsules
3 tsp. Pumpkin pie spice
1 tsp. Vanilla extract
Instructions
Place shea butter, coconut oil, olive oil, vitamin E, and 1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice in a heat safe glass bowl.
Warm in the microwave for 30 second increments until fully melted. Make sure to stir between each 30 second session.
Set on counter to cool for 30 minutes, and then place in the refrigerator until it partially sets up, about 10-15 minutes. If you leave it in too long, just set it out on the counter in a warm spot for a few minutes.
Transfer ingredients to the bowl of your hand or stand mixer, and mix until whipped and fluffy. Add vanilla and additional pumpkin pie spice mix until fully incorporated.
You don’t have to refrigerate your body butter unless you prefer a more solid consistency.
